Long-term Follow-up of Root Coverage Grafting

There are several techniques available for gingival grafting to cover exposed roots and to prevent future recession. Of these, the subepithelial connective tissue graft has abundant research showing its superiority to other approaches for root coverage and long-term stability. This is why we use it for the great majority of cases, despite its technically demanding microsurgical protocol. The photos below show a molar with dramatic recession (left photo), complete root coverage six weeks post-treatment (center photo), and maintenance of complete coverage after 3 years (right photo).
